There is no need to have as much money on hand to buy stocks when you are going to open a margin account. Such type of account enables you to borrow certain amounts of money using securities or cash existing in the account as collateral. Each respectable brokerage company has its own screening process to define whether it is possible to make purchases on margin.

The Federal Reserve needs a minimum investment of $2,000 to establish a margin account and generally restricts the sum you may borrow on a margin to 50 % of the original purchasing price. Not all stocks should be bought on the margin. When you buy the stock at a margin, you pay interest rates on margin loans, but the major part of brokerage companies charges comparatively low rates to promote transaction business.
